27 Bible Verses for Letting Go of Past Hurt

Holding onto past hurt is exhausting, and most people who are doing it know it.

They know the replaying is not helping.

They know the conversation they keep rehearsing in their head, the one where they finally say exactly the right thing to the person who hurt them, is never going to happen.

They know the bitterness is costing them more than it is costing the person they are bitter toward. They know all of this and still cannot seem to put it down.

That is not a moral failure. It is a human one.

The wound did not close properly. The betrayal was real. The loss was significant.

Something that should have been safe was not, and the body and mind do their work of trying to protect the person from experiencing that again by keeping the event close and accessible, which is not the same as healing.

What Scripture offers is not the instruction to simply decide to feel better.

It offers a path. Forgiveness is a decision, not a feeling, and it is made toward a debt the offender genuinely owes.

You are not pretending nothing happened. You are choosing to release the claim without waiting for what you are owed to be repaid.

Colossians 3:13 says forgive as the Lord forgave you. The Lord forgave you knowing exactly what was done and forgiving it anyway, not because it did not matter, but because holding the record was not where he chose to live.

Philippians 3:13 describes the posture Paul adopted toward his own past: forgetting what lies behind, straining toward what is ahead.

The straining is the honest word. It costs something. The pull of what is behind is real. Moving forward anyway is not denial. It is the choice to let the past be the past, which is the only place it actually belongs.

Letting Go Is Not Pretending. It Is Choosing Where to Live From Here.

The past hurt was real. The person who caused it may never acknowledge what they did. The apology may never arrive. The record of what happened is accurate.

Letting go does not rewrite any of that.

What it does is refuse to let the wound set the terms for everything that comes after it. The bitterness that Hebrews 12:15 describes as a root defiles not just the person carrying it but everyone around them. The person who cannot release the past hurt is not only managing their own pain. They are distributing it.

Joseph named what his brothers intended: they meant it for harm. He did not minimize that. He placed it inside a larger frame: God meant it for good. That reframing did not erase the pit or the years of slavery or the false accusation. It gave all of it a purpose that the original wound could not have contained.

The hurt you are carrying may have a purpose that the wound itself cannot show you yet.

Letting Go of the Past: What People Ask

Is it biblical to let go of past hurt?

Yes. Philippians 3:13 shows Paul actively forgetting what lies behind. Isaiah 43:18 commands not dwelling on former things. Ephesians 4:31 says to get rid of bitterness and anger. Colossians 3:13 calls for forgiving as the Lord forgave. The entire New Testament posture toward the past is forward-facing, releasing what is behind in order to receive what is ahead.

How do I let go of hurt according to the Bible?

Ephesians 4:32 says forgive as God in Christ forgave you, which establishes the model and the motivation. Mark 11:25 connects forgiveness directly to prayer. Romans 12:19 says release the need for revenge and trust God’s justice. Hebrews 12:15 warns against letting bitterness take root. The practical path involves the decision to forgive, releasing the debt, and refusing to rehearse the injury.

Does forgiving someone mean the hurt did not matter?

No. Genesis 50:20 shows Joseph naming the harm clearly before he forgave. Forgiveness is not minimizing what happened. It is the decision to stop requiring repayment from the person who owes it. The hurt mattered. The forgiveness is what you choose to do with the debt after acknowledging that it is real.

Can God heal past emotional wounds?

Yes. Psalm 147:3 says he heals the brokenhearted and binds their wounds. Joel 2:25 promises restoration of what was lost. Romans 8:28 says God works even the painful things toward good. Isaiah 61:3 describes beauty coming from ashes. The healing does not require pretending the wound was not real. It requires bringing the real wound to the one who heals.

How do I stop dwelling on past hurts as a Christian?

Isaiah 43:18 directly says do not dwell on the past. Philippians 4:8 redirects the mind toward what is true and good. Second Corinthians 10:5 talks about taking every thought captive. Philippians 3:13 shows straining toward what is ahead as the practical posture. Stopping the dwelling is an active choice made repeatedly, not a one-time resolution, and it becomes more sustainable with consistent prayer.

Father, I Want to Put This Down and Actually Mean It

Father, I want to release what I have been carrying, not because what happened did not matter, but because carrying it is costing me more than I can afford to keep paying.

Let Philippians 3:13 become my actual practice, not just a verse I know, and give me the willingness to strain toward what is ahead rather than staying inside what is behind.

Do what Joel 2:25 promises: restore the years that were taken, because you are the God who does not let waste have the final word.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
