Fruit does not lie.
A tree can look healthy from a distance. The trunk can be solid, the branches can be full, the leaves can be green and convincing.
But when the season for fruit arrives, the tree reveals what it actually is. You cannot fake that.
The fruit is the honest report on what has been happening underground, in the root system, in the quality of the soil, in the conditions the tree has been growing under when no one was evaluating the appearance.
Jesus used this image often enough that it cannot be accidental.
Matthew 7:16 asks: do people pick grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? The question answers itself.
A thornbush does not produce grapes because that is not what a thornbush is. The fruit is the output of the nature. And the nature is what the years of growth have produced, not what the tree presents on its best day.
The spiritual application is not subtle.
A person’s character is most accurately read not by their stated values or their impressive moments but by what they consistently produce in the ordinary seasons.
What do their relationships look like over time? What do the people closest to them say? What does their life yield? The fruit is the testimony.
Galatians 5:22–23 lists nine qualities that the Spirit produces in the person who is genuinely connected to God; otherwise known as the fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Nine distinct qualities, which are worth sitting with.
The fruit of the Spirit is not a mood. It is a collection of character outputs that show up across different situations, including the situations that test them.
John 15:5 is the verse that makes the connection between source and output explicit: I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
The productivity is conditional on the connection. A branch cut from the vine does not stop looking like a branch immediately. But it is already dead.

The Fruit Is the Honest Account
Fruit cannot be argued into existence.
The branch connected to the vine produces because the connection is real and the life is flowing. Cut the connection and the branch can maintain the appearance of life for a while, but the fruit eventually stops.
That is not a moral judgment. It is just biology, and the spiritual equivalent works the same way.
Jesus did not say the branches should try harder. He said abide. The abiding is the condition. The fruit is the result.
The person who is genuinely connected to God and living in that connection will produce what the Spirit produces, not all at once and not without the pruning that John 15:2 describes, but consistently, over time, in ways that other people can see and that the seasons of testing confirm.
The fruit is the testimony. It cannot be faked indefinitely.

Show me the places where I have been maintaining the appearance of the branch while the connection has grown thin, because I want what I produce to be real and lasting, not impressive and temporary.
Let the pruning you describe in John 15:2 do what it is supposed to do, and let what grows after it be more than what was there before.
