The servant’s heart in Scripture does not look the way most people imagine it.
The picture people carry is often of a naturally selfless person, someone whose personality makes serving others easy, someone who does not struggle with the impulse to be recognized or thanked.
Scripture describes something different.
The people the Bible holds up as examples of servant-hearted living are not people who were born without ego.
They are people who confronted their ego and chose service anyway, often at cost, often when no one was watching, often when the person being served did not deserve it and would not acknowledge it afterward.
Jesus washed the disciples’ feet knowing what was ahead of him.

The Servant’s Heart Cannot Be Faked for Long

Anyone can perform service in front of an audience. The public act is easy compared to the sustained pattern of quietly noticing what needs to be done and doing it without waiting to be asked or thanked.
