Jesus prayed for unity the night before he died.
That fact alone should settle any debate about whether church unity is important.
In John 17:21, with the cross hours away, Jesus asked the Father that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you.
He did not pray for their safety. He did not pray for their comfort. He prayed for their oneness, and the reason he gave is striking: so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
The unity of the church is presented as evidence for the watching world that Jesus is who he claimed to be. Division in the church does not just hurt the people involved. It undermines the credibility of the gospel itself.
Paul fought for this in every church he planted.
Corinth was splitting along personality lines. Galatia was fracturing over theology. Philippi had two prominent women whose personal conflict was affecting the whole congregation.
In each case, Paul’s response was not to manage the division but to confront it, because he understood that a divided church is a church working against its own stated purpose.
The call to unity does not mean the absence of disagreement.
It means the presence of a commitment deeper than the disagreement.

Unity Is Not the Absence of Difference. It Is the Refusal to Let Difference Become Division.
The early church in Acts 4 was not composed of people who naturally agreed about everything.
They came from different economic backgrounds, different trades, different positions on the social scale.
What made them of one heart and soul was not similarity of opinion. It was the overwhelming shared reality of a resurrected Christ who had rearranged their priorities so fundamentally that personal property and individual preference lost their grip.
Ephesians 4:3 does not say achieve unity. It says make every effort to keep the unity. The unity already exists in the Spirit. The work is not creating it but protecting it from the forces that are constantly trying to pull it apart.
Personal offenses, theological preferences, leadership disputes, the accumulation of small grievances that calcify over time into structural fractures: these are the threats, and they require daily, deliberate attention.
Psalm 133:1 calls the unity of God’s people good and pleasant. It is also rare, which is why the psalmist noted it.

What does the Bible say about unity in the church?

God, Make Us One the Way You and the Father Are One
Father, I want to bring before you the specific places where the community you placed me in is fractured, and ask you to show me what my role is in the repair rather than waiting for someone else to start.
Let Ephesians 4:3 be my actual practice: making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit rather than passively watching it deteriorate while hoping someone more qualified will address it.
Teach me what Colossians 3:14 looks like in real terms, putting on love that actually binds, especially toward the people in the body I find most difficult to agree with.
