Proverbs 12:22 says the Lord detests lying lips but delights in trustworthy people.
The word detests is not casual. It places dishonesty in the same moral category as things God finds repulsive at a fundamental level.
And the delight is personal. God responds to honest people with something that resembles pleasure.
Most people consider themselves honest.
Most people are also selectively honest, truthful when the truth costs nothing and creative with the facts when it costs something.
The adjusted story that makes the teller look better. The omission that allows someone to draw an inaccurate conclusion without technically being lied to. The exaggeration that inflates the accomplishment just enough to be impressive without being verifiable.
These are the common currencies of everyday dishonesty, and most people trade in them without recognizing the transaction.
Scripture does not distinguish between big lies and small ones. Proverbs 6:16–19 lists a lying tongue among the seven things God hates.

Honesty Is Expensive Up Front and Cheap in the Long Run. Dishonesty Is the Reverse.
The lie is almost always easier in the moment.
It avoids the conflict, preserves the impression, buys the time, and protects whatever the truth would have exposed.
And for a period, it works. Proverbs 20:17 describes this with precision: bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth will be full of gravel. The sweetness is real. It is also temporary. The gravel comes later, and it comes reliably.
Truthful lips endure forever according to Proverbs 12:19. The endurance is the payoff that the lie cannot produce. The person who tells the truth consistently, even when the truth is expensive, builds something the liar cannot build: a reputation that does not require management.
