James 2:1 opens the subject with a command that leaves no room for negotiation: my brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.
The “must not” is absolute. And the context James provides is specific enough to be uncomfortable.
He describes a scene where a rich man walks into a gathering wearing fine clothes and a gold ring, and a poor man walks in wearing shabby clothes.
The rich man gets the good seat. The poor man is told to stand over there or sit on the floor.
James asks whether they have not discriminated among themselves and become judges with evil thoughts. The question is rhetorical. The answer is yes.
Partiality is the practice of assigning value to people based on what they bring to the table rather than who they are before God. It is the instinct to treat the wealthy donor differently from the widow with nothing. To give the well-connected person more attention than the unknown one. To judge the outsider more harshly than the insider.
God does none of this. He commands his people to stop doing it.

Partiality Reveals Whose System You Are Operating Under
James 2:5 asks a question that reframes the entire discussion: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith? The world’s system assigns value based on wealth, appearance, status, and utility.
God’s system assigns value based on the image he placed in every person and the price he paid to redeem them.
The person who gives the rich visitor the good seat and tells the poor visitor to stand in the corner is not just being rude.
They are applying a value system that contradicts the one God operates by. James calls them judges with evil thoughts, which is strong language for something most churches do without noticing.
Leviticus 19:15 prohibits partiality in both directions: do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great. The command is not to reverse the bias. It is to eliminate it.
The poor person does not automatically deserve preferential treatment any more than the rich person does. Both deserve justice. Both deserve equal dignity. Both are made by the same God.
Proverbs 22:2 places the rich and the poor side by side and names what they share: the Lord is the maker of them all. The shared origin settles the value question.
