The right hand of God is mentioned more often in the New Testament than most people realize.

It appears in the Gospels, Acts, the Epistles, and Revelation.

Jesus referenced it himself during his trial before the Sanhedrin. Stephen saw it in a vision while being stoned to death. Peter preached it at Pentecost. Paul built theology on it in Romans, Ephesians, and Colossians. The writer of Hebrews made it the centerpiece of an argument about the superiority of Christ over every other priest, angel, and authority.

The right hand in the ancient world was the position of highest honor, authority, and power.

When Psalm 110:1 records the Lord saying to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet, it is describing the enthronement of someone who has been given governing authority over everything that exists.

Jesus is not waiting passively at the right hand. He is reigning. Hebrews 7:25 says he always lives to make intercession.

The Right Hand Is Not a Retirement. It Is a Reign.

Some people read the ascension as the end of the action. Jesus finished the work on the cross, rose from the dead, ascended to heaven, and sat down. Sitting down sounds like resting. It sounds like the assignment is complete and the position is ceremonial.

Hebrews 7:25 says otherwise. He always lives to make intercession. Always. Right now. At this moment. The person reading this has a high priest at the right hand of God who is actively, currently praying for them.

Romans 8:34 places the intercession in the context of the question Who condemns? The answer is no one, because the one who has the authority to condemn is the same one who died, rose, ascended, and is now interceding instead.
