First Corinthians 6:11 is the verse that keeps the conversation from ending in condemnation.

Paul had just listed the sexually immoral among those who will not inherit the kingdom of God.

And then he wrote: and such were some of you. Past tense. The Corinthian church included people who had been sexually immoral before they came to Christ. Paul did not minimize their past or deny that it had been sin.

He acknowledged it and then placed it behind them: but you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified.

The washing, the sanctification, and the justification were accomplished by Christ, not by the person’s moral improvement.

The sexually immoral person does not become acceptable to God by stopping the behavior. They become acceptable through faith in the one who paid for the sin, and the stopping of the behavior flows from the new identity rather than producing it.

Psalm 51:10 is David’s prayer after his adultery with Bathsheba. He asked God to create a clean heart. The word create is the same Hebrew word used in Genesis 1:1 for God creating the heavens and the earth.

David was not asking for a repair. He was asking for something that only God can do: produce something new where something broken used to be.

The standard is high. The forgiveness is complete. Both are true at the same time.
