27 Bible Verses About Enjoying Life

Ecclesiastes 9:7 says Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do.

The verse is a command, yet most religious people struggle with it.

The enjoyment is not something you earn after sufficient spiritual performance. It is something God pre-authorized.

Solomon wrote more about enjoyment than any other biblical author, which is striking because he also wrote more about the meaninglessness of life than anyone else.

The same man who said Vanity of vanities; all is vanity also said there is nothing better for a person than to eat and drink and find enjoyment in their toil.

He held both realities simultaneously. Life is brief and fleeting. And within that brevity, God intends for you to experience pleasure, satisfaction, and gladness as gifts from his hand.

The Bible’s theology of enjoyment is built on a foundation most people miss: God is not stingy.

First Timothy 6:17 says he richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. The richly and the everything are both in the text, and both are intentional.

The God Who Made Flavor, Color, Music, and Laughter Is Not Against Your Enjoyment

Somewhere along the way, a version of Christianity developed that treated enjoyment as spiritually suspicious.

The more miserable you were, the more serious your faith must be. The more pleasure you denied yourself, the closer to God you must be getting. The austere face became the holy face.

The Bible does not support this.

God created taste buds and then created food that tastes remarkable. He created the capacity for sexual pleasure and placed it inside marriage. He created rhythm and melody and gave humans the impulse to dance. He created color across a spectrum so vast the human eye cannot perceive all of it.

The God who designed all of this is not the God who frowns when you enjoy what he built.

Ecclesiastes 9:7 says God has already approved what you do. The approval preceded the enjoyment. You are not trying to earn permission to be happy. The permission was issued before you asked.

Nehemiah 8:10 records a scene where the people of Israel were weeping after hearing the law read aloud.

They were convicted by how far they had fallen short. And Nehemiah told them to stop crying, go eat rich food, drink sweet wine, and share with those who have nothing.

The instruction to enjoy came in the middle of conviction. The two were not mutually exclusive.

Proverbs 17:22 says a cheerful heart is good medicine. The cheerfulness is not denial. It is a settled confidence that God is good, that his gifts are good, and that receiving them with gratitude is one of the most authentic forms of worship available to a human being.

The person who cannot enjoy a meal, a sunset, a conversation with a friend, or the sound of their child’s laughter without spiritual guilt has misunderstood the character of the God they are serving. He made all of it. He called it very good. And he richly provides it for your enjoyment.

What People Ask About Enjoying Life According to the Bible

Does the Bible say it’s okay to enjoy life?

Ecclesiastes 9:7 commands eating and drinking with joy because God has already approved it. Ecclesiastes 3:12–13 says there is nothing better than being joyful. First Timothy 6:17 says God provides everything for enjoyment. Psalm 16:11 says fullness of joy is found in God’s presence. The Bible does not merely permit enjoyment. It commands it as a response to God’s generosity.

Is pleasure a sin according to the Bible?

Pleasure itself is not sinful. God created the capacity for pleasure and designed countless sources of it. First Timothy 4:4 says everything God created is good and nothing is to be rejected if received with thanksgiving. The sin occurs when pleasure is pursued outside God’s boundaries, elevated above God’s authority, or consumed without gratitude to the one who provided it.

What does Ecclesiastes say about enjoying life?

Ecclesiastes repeatedly instructs the reader to enjoy food, drink, work, and relationships as gifts from God’s hand. Ecclesiastes 2:24, 3:12–13, 5:18–19, 8:15, and 9:7–9 all contain direct instructions to find enjoyment in life. Solomon concludes that enjoyment received with gratitude and lived within the fear of God is the proper response to a life that is brief, unpredictable, and sustained entirely by God’s provision.

How can I enjoy life as a Christian?

Philippians 4:4 says rejoice in the Lord always. Psalm 37:4 says Delight yourself in the Lord. First Thessalonians 5:18 says give thanks in all circumstances. Philippians 4:11 says learn contentment. The Christian path to enjoyment runs through gratitude, contentment, and the recognition that every good thing is a gift from God. The enjoyment deepens when the source is acknowledged.

Does God want us to be happy?

Nehemiah 8:10 records the instruction to celebrate with rich food and sweet drinks because the joy of the Lord is your strength. John 10:10 says Jesus came to give life to the full. Psalm 16:11 says fullness of joy exists in God’s presence. The Bible presents a God who delights in the joy of his people, provides abundantly for their enjoyment, and commands celebration as a regular part of faithful living.

God, Teach Me to Receive What You Gave With the Gratitude It Deserves

Father, I want to bring before you the ways I have treated your good gifts as spiritually suspicious rather than receiving them with the gratitude 1 Timothy 6:17 says they deserve, because you richly provide everything for enjoyment and I have been holding your generosity at arm’s length.

Let Ecclesiastes 9:7 reshape how I approach the ordinary pleasures of today: the meal, the conversation, the work, the rest, because you already approved what you gave and my guilt about receiving it was never something you required.

Where Psalm 118:24 says this is the day you have made, let me actually rejoice in it rather than surviving it, because the day was designed by someone who wants me to live it fully, not endure it reluctantly.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
