Nobody tells you what to do with yourself while you wait.
The sermons say trust God. The books say be patient. The worship songs say hold on.
But when Tuesday morning arrives, and nothing has changed since last Tuesday, and the Tuesday before that, the advice starts to feel like a poster on a wall rather than a weight-bearing structure.
The hardest part of a waiting season is not the absence of the answer. It is the repetition of ordinary days that contain no visible evidence that the answer is on its way.
Habakkuk stood on a watchtower and asked God how long. David asked how long in at least six different psalms. The Israelites spent four hundred years in Egypt before the deliverer showed up.
The question how long appears so frequently in Scripture that it functions as one of faith’s most reliable indicators.
People who have stopped caring do not ask how long. Only the ones still holding on ask that.

What the Waiting Season Builds Cannot Be Built Any Other Way
Abraham did not become the father of faith by receiving Isaac immediately.
The twenty-five years between promise and birth were the years that built the man capable of carrying what the promise contained.
If Isaac had arrived in year one, the Abraham who held him would have been a different person, younger in faith, untested, relying on a confidence that had never been pressured into becoming trust.
Joseph did not become Egypt’s administrator by skipping the pit, the slavery, and the prison.
Thirteen years of unjust suffering produced a man who could manage a nation’s food supply during a famine and forgive the brothers who sold him. No shortcut would have produced that combination of competence and mercy.
Psalm 130:6 compares waiting for God to a night watchman waiting for morning. The watchman does not create the sunrise. He cannot accelerate it. But he knows with absolute certainty that it is coming, because it has come every morning before this one.
His job during the dark hours is simply to stay at his post. That is the entire assignment during a waiting season. Stay at the post. The morning is not optional. It is scheduled.

Where Habakkuk 2:3 says the vision has an appointed time, let me stop treating the appointed as negotiable, because you set the schedule before I started counting.
And where Psalm 130:6 compares this to a watchman waiting for morning, let me remember that the morning has never once failed to arrive. My job in the dark is not to create the sunrise. It is to stay awake until it comes.
