The question behind this search is almost always personal. Someone has lost a spouse, or fears losing one, and they want to know: will I see them again? The honest answer is that Scripture addresses the question directly in one place and indirectly in many others. Matthew 22:30 records Jesus saying that in the resurrection … Read more
David is the Bible’s most prominent example of a cheating husband, and the text does not protect him. Second Samuel 11 records the sequence with clinical precision. He saw Bathsheba. He sent for her. He slept with her. She became pregnant. He arranged for her husband Uriah to be killed in battle. And then Nathan … Read more
James 5:14 gives the most direct instruction in the New Testament about anointing oil: is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. The instruction is specific. The elders pray. The oil is applied. The prayer … Read more
The lion carries more symbolic weight in Scripture than any other animal. It represents Jesus in Revelation 5:5, where he is called the Lion of the tribe of Judah. It represents Satan in 1 Peter 5:8, where the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. The same creature is used for … Read more
The sea of forgetfulness is not a verse. It is a phrase Christians have drawn from Micah 7:19, which says God will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. Peter had just been reinstated by Jesus on the beach. Three times he was asked if he loved Jesus. Three times he answered. Then Jesus told him how he would die. And immediately, Peter turned, saw John, and asked: Lord, what about this man? Jesus answered: What is that to you? Follow me. That exchange … Read more
The darkest hour is not when God leaves. It is when it feels like he has. Psalm 22:1 records David crying out My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Jesus quoted that same psalm from the cross. The feeling of abandonment was real in both cases. The actual abandonment was not. David was … Read more
God worked with his hands before he told anyone else to. Genesis 2:7 says the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. The word formed is the Hebrew yatsar, the same word used for a potter shaping clay on a wheel. God got his hands into the material. He did not … Read more
The first sibling relationship in the Bible ended in murder. Cain killed Abel in a field after God accepted Abel’s offering and rejected his. The rivalry was not about the brother. It was about what the brother received that Cain did not. Genesis 4:7 records God’s warning to Cain before it happened: sin is crouching … Read more
The Hebrew word hebel, translated vanity in Ecclesiastes, literally means vapor or breath. Something that appears for a moment and then disappears. Solomon used it thirty-eight times in twelve chapters to describe the condition of everything pursued under the sun without God as the reference point. Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. The modern use … Read more
