Breakthrough, by definition, happens after a period of resistance. You do not break through open space. You break through a wall, a barrier, a season of stagnation that has been holding something back. The very word implies that something was blocked, and that the blockage was overcome. This means that if you are in the … Read more
Your joy is not a feeling. It is a possession, and it was purchased at too high a price to give away carelessly. This distinction is essential. If joy were merely an emotion, then naturally it would be subject to whatever emotional conditions surround it. A difficult person would logically produce difficult emotions. A hard … Read more
What God has prepared for you cannot be taken by someone else’s success. This is the truth that comparison kills. The moment you begin measuring your life against someone else’s, you have accepted a premise that Scripture does not support: that God is operating a limited inventory, that the blessing given to that person is … Read more

Others confuse acceptance with endorsement: accepting a person as meaning you approve of everything about … Read more
The grief of a mother who has lost a child is a category of pain that Scripture acknowledges specifically. It is not the same as other grief. A parent who buries a child experiences something that reverses what feels like the natural order. Children are supposed to outlive their parents. The relationship is supposed to … Read more
Selflessness is one of the most countercultural things a person can practice in any generation. The default orientation of the human heart is inward. What do I get? What do I lose? How does this affect me? This is not a character flaw unique to particularly selfish people. It is the baseline condition of the … Read more
