21 Bible Verses for Courage and Strength When You Feel Weak

Weakness is not the enemy of faith. Staying in it alone is.

Every person in Scripture who did anything significant started from inadequacy.

Moses argued with God (about his unworthiness to lead the people of Israel) at the burning bush.
Gideon was hiding in a winepress.
Jeremiah said he was too young.

God consistently chooses people who know they are not enough.

If you feel weak today, you are in good company.

God Commands Courage

The most repeated command in the Bible is not about morality or doctrine. It is “fear not.”

God does not suggest courage. He commands it, and every command comes with a reason: He is with you.

Verse 1: Joshua 1:9

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9, NIV)

Put it to work: God commands strength, then explains why: His presence goes with you. Before your next difficult moment, say this verse aloud. The command and the reason belong together.

Verse 2: Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV)

Put it to work: “Forsake” means to abandon mid-situation. Write that word down, cross it out, write “never” beside it. God will not leave. That promise is the ground your courage stands on.

Verse 3: Isaiah 41:10

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, NIV)

Put it to work: Count the active verbs God uses about Himself: strengthen, help, uphold. Three commitments. On the days when fear is loudest, pray through each one by name.

Verse 4: 1 Chronicles 28:20

“Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the LORD is finished.” (1 Chronicles 28:20, NIV)

Put it to work: Notice what follows the command to Solomon: “do the work.” Courage is not waiting until fear disappears. It is moving into the task while depending on God.

Strength That Comes From God Alone

Human strength has a ceiling. Everyone hits it eventually. Scripture does not offer better self-management. It offers a different source entirely.

Verse 5: Isaiah 40:29-31

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:29-31, NIV)

Put it to work: This promise is tied to hoping in the Lord, not resting or working harder. When you feel depleted, the question is not “how do I recover?” but “where is my hope placed?” Redirect it to God.

Verse 6: Philippians 4:13

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13, NIV)

Put it to work: Paul wrote this from prison. Read it in that context. Whatever hard thing is in front of you, this is not a promise of easy success. It is a promise Christ will sustain you through it.

Verse 7: Psalm 73:26

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73:26, NIV)

Put it to work: Asaph admits his heart failed, then names who holds him anyway. When faith is barely holding, pray honestly: “My heart is failing. You are still my strength.”

Verse 8: Nehemiah 8:10

“Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10, NIV)

Put it to work: The people were already grieving. This verse does not say suppress it. It says do not let grief be the final word. Find one specific reason to thank God today. That act of joy is strength.

When Weakness Is the Point

Some seasons of weakness are not problems to escape. They are the exact conditions under which God’s power becomes most visible. Paul did not tolerate weakness. He rethought what strength was.

Verse 9: 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10, NIV)

Put it to work: Paul asked God three times to remove what was making him weak. God said no and gave a reason. Name your weakness. Ask whether His grace might be sufficient for it instead.

Verse 10: Romans 8:26

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” (Romans 8:26, NIV)

Put it to work: When you cannot find words for what you are carrying, sit in silence before God. The Spirit is already praying for you. You do not have to produce a coherent prayer. Show up.

Verse 11: 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9, NIV)

Put it to work: Paul pairs every difficult word with a defiant “but not.” Write your own version for your situation. Hard pressed, but not crushed. The structure itself trains how you see your circumstances.

Verse 12: James 1:2-4

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:2-4, NIV)

Put it to work: James is not asking you to feel happy about trials. Ask God to show you what this current season of weakness is producing. Perseverance always leaves something behind.

God’s Presence Is the Courage

Fear shrinks when you become convinced you are not facing anything alone. The most consistent answer Scripture gives to fear is not instruction. It is presence.

Verse 13: Psalm 27:1

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1, NIV)

Put it to work: Name what is generating fear in your life. Place that name next to: “The LORD is my stronghold; of whom shall I be afraid?” Let the answer do its work.

Verse 14: Psalm 46:1-2

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.” (Psalm 46:1-2, NIV)

Put it to work: “Therefore” connects the promise to the response. Because God is refuge and strength, therefore we will not fear. Whatever is destabilizing you today, name it, then say: “Therefore I will not fear.” The sequence matters.

Verse 15: Isaiah 43:2

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” (Isaiah 43:2, NIV)

Put it to work: The verse says “when,” not “if.” Difficulty is assumed. What God promises is not dry ground but His presence through the water. Whatever you are walking through right now, He is already in it.

Verse 16: John 16:33

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, NIV)

Put it to work: Jesus announces trouble before He announces peace. He overcomes it. When circumstances shake you, the question is not “why is this happening?” but “is the One who overcame still with me?”

Verse 17: Romans 8:31

“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31, NIV)

Put it to work: Write down what opposes you today. Then ask: is it greater than the God who is for me? That is a theological argument built on God’s character. Let it sit.

Stand Firm and Do Not Quit

Courage is not one decision. It is the same decision made again through prolonged difficulty. These verses speak to the long middle of hard seasons.

Verse 18: Ephesians 6:10

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” (Ephesians 6:10, NIV)

Put it to work: Before you muster more effort, ask: am I drawing on the Lord’s strength or grinding on my own? The armor of God is put on through prayer. Start there.

Verse 19: Galatians 6:9

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9, NIV)

Put it to work: If you are exhausted in a long obedience, pray this back: “I am weary. I am choosing not to give up. I trust the harvest is coming.” That is not weakness. That is perseverance.

Verse 20: 1 Corinthians 16:13

“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.” (1 Corinthians 16:13, NIV)

Put it to work: Paul closes an entire letter with four commands that build on each other: on guard, standing firm, courageous, strong. Identify where in that sequence you are struggling most.

Verse 21: Psalm 31:24

“Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD.” (Psalm 31:24, NIV)

Put it to work: David wrestled through the whole psalm and landed here. Where you end matters. Close your prayer time with this verse today, not where the fear is, but here.

A Prayer for Courage in Weak Moments

Father, I am tired of pretending the weakness is not real. It is real. But so is what You have promised. You go with me. You strengthen me. Your power is made perfect in exactly the kind of weakness I am feeling right now. I am not asking You to remove it. I am asking You to be glorified through it. Give me the courage to take the next step. That is enough for today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Questions People Ask About Courage and Strength

What does the Bible say about courage?

According to GotQuestions.org, biblical courage is described as boldness and confidence, the opposite of fear. God never commands courage without a reason. In nearly every instance, He says “fear not,” He follows it immediately with a statement about His own character or presence.

What does it mean that God’s power is made perfect in weakness?

In 2 Corinthians 12:9, Paul explains that God refused to remove his difficulty because weakness created the exact conditions for God’s power to be fully displayed. When believers stop relying on their own capacity, God’s strength becomes the only thing left. That is the point.

Why should a Christian be of good courage?

GotQuestions.org notes that courage for the believer is not based on circumstances but on the sovereignty of God. His plans cannot be thwarted. His omnipotence makes every situation subservient to His will. Christians can be courageous because of who is with them, not because of what they face.

How do I find strength when I feel weak?

Isaiah 40:31 connects renewed strength to hoping in the Lord, not to resting or effort. Practically, this begins with redirecting misplaced hope back to God through prayer and Scripture. Weakness often signals that strength has been drawn from the wrong source for too long.

Is it a sin to feel afraid or weak as a Christian?

No. Jesus Himself experienced anguish in Gethsemane and wept at the tomb of Lazarus. David expressed fear throughout the Psalms. Feeling afraid is human. The issue Scripture addresses is not the emotion itself but whether fear is allowed to have the final word over trust in God.
