27 Bible Verses to Pray Over Anointing Oil

James 5:14 gives the most direct instruction in the New Testament about anointing oil: is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.

The instruction is specific. The elders pray. The oil is applied.

The prayer is offered in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well.

The oil is not magic. It is a physical act of obedience that accompanies a spiritual act of faith, and the healing comes from God, not from the substance.

In the Old Testament, anointing oil consecrated priests, kings, and the tabernacle itself.

Exodus 30:22–33 records God giving Moses a precise recipe for sacred anointing oil and declaring it holy.

Aaron was anointed before he could serve as priest. David was anointed by Samuel before he was recognized as king.

The oil signified that God had set this person apart for a specific purpose, and the setting apart was God’s act, not the oil’s.

The Oil Is the Obedience. The Power Is God’s.

The anointing oil in Scripture was never the source of anything. It was always the physical marker of a spiritual reality that God was producing.

When Samuel poured oil on David’s head, the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. The oil did not produce the Spirit.

The Spirit came because God had chosen David, and the oil was the visible act that accompanied the invisible choosing.

When the elders in James 5 anoint a sick person, the healing comes from the prayer offered in faith and the Lord who raises up. The oil accompanies the prayer. It does not replace it.

The person who prays over anointing oil is not activating a substance.

They are expressing faith through a physical act that Scripture authorizes, trusting that the God who commanded the practice is the same God who provides what the practice represents: healing, protection, consecration, and the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 23:5 says you anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. The overflow belongs to God. The anointing is received, not manufactured.

What People Ask About Praying Over Anointing Oil

What Bible verse talks about anointing with oil?

James 5:14 is the most direct New Testament instruction, calling for elders to anoint the sick with oil in the name of the Lord. Mark 6:13 records the disciples anointing the sick and healing them. Exodus 30:25–30 gives the Old Testament instructions for sacred anointing oil. Psalm 23:5 describes God anointing the psalmist’s head with oil as a symbol of blessing and favor.

How do you pray over anointing oil according to the Bible?

James 5:14–15 provides the model: pray in the name of the Lord, in faith, applying the oil to the person being prayed for. The prayer should be specific, faith-filled, and offered in Jesus’s name. Scriptures about healing, protection, or consecration can be spoken over the oil as declarations of what God has promised in his Word.

What is the purpose of anointing oil in the Bible?

Anointing oil served multiple purposes: consecrating priests and kings in Exodus 30 and 1 Samuel 16, healing the sick in James 5:14 and Mark 6:13, and symbolizing the Holy Spirit’s presence and empowerment in Luke 4:18 and Acts 10:38. The oil was always a physical sign of a spiritual reality that God was producing in the person or object being anointed.

Can anyone use anointing oil or only pastors?

James 5:14 specifically mentions elders of the church in the context of anointing the sick. Mark 6:13 records the disciples, not just the apostles, anointing with oil. First John 2:20 says all believers have an anointing from the Holy One. While the James 5 context involves church leadership, the broader biblical pattern suggests any believer can pray over and apply oil in faith.

Does the Bible say what kind of oil to use for anointing?

Exodus 30:23–25 gives a specific recipe involving myrrh, cinnamon, calamus (an aromatic plant used in ancient perfumery), cassia (a spice similar to cinnamon), and olive oil for the tabernacle’s sacred oil. James 5:14 does not specify a type. Olive oil is the most commonly used in biblical and church tradition because it was the base of the Old Testament formula and the most available oil in the ancient Near East.

God, Let What I Pray Over This Oil Be Backed by the Faith James 5 Describes

Father, I want to bring before you the act of anointing I am about to carry out, and ask you to let the power behind it come entirely from you rather than from the substance or from me.

Let James 5:15 be the operating promise: the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well, because you are the Lord who raises up, and the oil is the obedience, not the source.

Where healing is needed, heal. Where protection is needed, protect. Where consecration is needed, set apart. And let the faith I bring to this moment be the kind that Mark 9:23 says makes all things possible.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
