27 Bible Verses About Strength in Faith

Hebrews 11 is sometimes called the hall of faith, but hall of risk would be more accurate.

Every person listed in that chapter did something that made no sense without God in the equation.

Abel offered a sacrifice that got him killed. Noah built a boat with no rain in the forecast. Abraham packed for a destination he had never been given an address for. Moses chose suffering with slaves over comfort in a palace.

The strength in their faith was not a personality trait. It was a muscle developed through repeated use in situations where the visible evidence recommended the opposite course of action.

Luke 17:5 records the disciples asking Jesus to increase their faith, and his answer rerouted the entire conversation.

He told them faith the size of a mustard seed could uproot a mulberry tree. The problem was never the quantity.

A thimble of genuine faith applied to an actual situation outperforms a warehouse of theoretical belief that never touches a real decision.

The strength in faith comes from deployment under pressure.

The Strongest Faith in the Bible Belonged to People Who Had Every Reason to Quit and Did Not

Hebrews 11:33–34 compresses centuries of faith into a single breathless sentence.

Through faith people conquered kingdoms, shut the mouths of lions, escaped the edge of the sword, and from weakness were made strong.

That last phrase is the one worth pausing on. From weakness were made strong. The strength arrived through the faith, and the faith was exercised inside the weakness.

The two were not sequential. They were simultaneous.

Romans 4:20 says Abraham grew strong in his faith. The word grew means the strength was not static. It developed over the twenty-five years between the promise of a son and Isaac’s birth.

The faith was tested by Sarah’s barrenness, by the passage of decades, by the absurdity of a ninety-year-old woman becoming pregnant.

Each year that passed without fulfillment was another rep in the gym of faith, and Abraham came out stronger on the other side.

The woman in Matthew 15:28 was a Canaanite whose daughter was demon-possessed. Jesus initially did not respond to her. Then he told her the bread was for the children of Israel. She persisted and said even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the master’s table.

Jesus called her faith great. The strength in her faith was demonstrated through its refusal to accept the first no as the final answer.

What People Ask About Strength in Faith

How do I strengthen my faith according to the Bible?

Romans 10:17 says faith comes through hearing God’s Word. Jude 1:20 says build yourself up in faith through prayer. Colossians 2:7 says grow rooted and established. First Peter 1:7 says trials refine faith like fire refines gold. Faith strengthens through consistent Scripture engagement, prayer, community, and the testing of real-world application.

Can faith really grow stronger over time?

Romans 4:20 says Abraham grew strong in faith over decades. Second Thessalonians 1:3 says faith can flourish and increase. Colossians 2:7 describes being strengthened in faith progressively. Hebrews 12:2 says Jesus perfects faith. The Bible treats faith as a developing capacity that deepens through sustained exercise rather than arriving complete.

What weakens faith according to the Bible?

Hebrews 12:1 says sin entangles and hinders. James 1:6 says doubting makes a person unstable. Matthew 13:22 says worldly concerns choke spiritual growth. Romans 10:17 implies distance from God’s Word diminishes faith. Faith weakens through neglected Scripture, unaddressed sin, isolation from community, and sustained attention to anxiety.

Does God test our faith?

First Peter 1:6–7 says trials prove faith’s genuineness. James 1:3 says testing produces endurance. Genesis 22:1 says God tested Abraham. Deuteronomy 8:2 says God tested Israel. God permits testing as a formative process that distinguishes genuine faith from theoretical belief and strengthens what survives the examination.

What does strong faith look like practically?

Hebrews 11:8 shows Abraham obeying before knowing the destination. Mark 5:34 shows a woman acting on belief despite years of suffering. First Corinthians 16:13 says to stand firm and be courageous. Second Timothy 4:7 shows Paul finishing with faith intact. Strong faith acts on God’s word in real situations before confirmation arrives.

Lord, Build in Me the Kind of Faith That Gets Stronger Under Load

Hebrews 11:33–34 says From weakness were made strong, and I have been treating my weakness as a disqualification when you have been treating it as the raw material. Where Romans 4:20 says Abraham grew strong in faith through the years of waiting, let the season I am currently enduring build capacity rather than eroding it.

Where the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15:28 refused the first no and pressed through until Jesus called her faith great, give me that same persistence when the answer I expected does not arrive on the schedule I set.

And where 2 Timothy 4:7 records Paul saying I have kept the faith at the end of a life that included beatings, shipwrecks, and imprisonment, let me carry mine through whatever this season brings and arrive at the end still holding what I started with.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
