Joshua 21:45 makes a claim so sweeping it reads like something a person would challenge. Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed. All came to pass. Joshua said that at the end of his life, after decades of watching God’s commitments materialize … Read more

Habakkuk 3:17–18 is the most extreme statement about joy in the entire Bible, and it does not get quoted nearly enough. Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen … Read more

Nobody tells you what to do with yourself while you wait. The sermons say trust God. The books say be patient. The worship songs say hold on. But when Tuesday morning arrives, and nothing has changed since last Tuesday, and the Tuesday before that, the advice starts to feel like a poster on a wall … Read more

Worry is the mind’s attempt to solve a problem that has not arrived yet. Most anxious people are not dealing with a present crisis. Jesus reserved his harshest language for people who … Read more

Abraham packed up his household and left for a country he had never seen based on a promise from a God he had only recently begun to follow. Genesis 12:1 records the instruction: go from your country, your kindred, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. God did not hand … Read more

First Timothy 4:8 is the verse most Christians quote when this topic comes up, and they usually quote only the first half. Bodily exercise profits a little. They stop there, as if Paul were dismissing physical fitness. But the verse actually acknowledges that bodily training has value. Paul placed it on a lower tier than … Read more

When the Bible says heart, it rarely means the organ pumping blood through your chest. The Hebrew word lev appears over eight hundred times in the Old Testament, and in nearly every instance it refers to the center of a person’s inner life: their thoughts, their will, their emotions, their moral compass, the place where … Read more

Jacob worked seven years in a foreign land to marry Rachel, and Genesis 29:20 says the years seemed like only a few days because of his love for her. That one sentence has been underlined by people in long-distance relationships for centuries, and for good reason. It suggests that deep love can compress time, can … Read more
