Deception rarely announces itself. It arrives dressed as something reasonable. A small adjustment to the facts. A technically true statement arranged to produce a false impression. A silence that allows someone to believe something that is not accurate because correcting them would cost too much. The person being deceived usually does not know it is … Read more

Gratitude for large things is easy. The promotion, the recovery, the answered prayer that everyone around you can see: these produce thanks almost automatically. The feeling generates itself. The small things are harder. The warm meal. The conversation that went well. The body that woke up this morning and carried you through another day without … Read more

The Bible does not give women a step-by-step process for finding a husband. A storm front moving across a flat horizon makes people stand still at windows. The first clear night after a week of clouds, when the stars reappear in full, produces a response … Read more

Children are not a human achievement. They are a divine grant. Psalm 127:3 uses the word “heritage,” which in Hebrew conveys the sense of something received rather than produced. An inheritance comes from someone above you. You do not earn it. You receive it. The child born into a family arrives as a gift from … Read more

A mother’s love for her son is one of the most tenacious forces in human experience. It does not require the son to be performing well to remain fully operational. It does not diminish when the son makes choices that break the mother’s heart. It persists through the seasons when the relationship is easy and … Read more
