Jesus told his followers to look at the birds of the air.
Not study them. Not analyze their behavior. Look at them. Notice something.
They do not sow. They do not reap. They do not gather into barns. And yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
The observation is simple enough for a child to understand and difficult enough that most adults spend their entire lives failing to apply it.
The birds are not anxious about tomorrow’s food. They are not hoarding against next season.
They are living inside the provision of a God who has never failed to provide for them, and Jesus pointed at them and said: Are you not of more value than they?
Birds appear in Scripture from Genesis to Revelation.
God brought them to Adam to be named. He used ravens to feed Elijah. He compared himself to a mother hen gathering her chicks. He used the eagle as his primary metaphor for what happens to people who wait on him: they mount up with wings. The dove descended on Jesus at his baptism. The sparrow that falls to the ground does not fall outside his attention.
The birds have been preaching all along. Most of us have not been watching.

The God Who Notices a Single Sparrow Falling Has Never Lost Track of You
The sparrow sold in the market in Jesus’s time was the cheapest bird available.
Two for a penny in Matthew’s account. Five for two pennies in Luke’s version, which means the fifth one was thrown in free, a bird so inexpensive that the merchant did not bother charging for it.
And Jesus said not one of them falls to the ground outside your Father’s care.
If God tracks the landing of a bird that the market considered worthless, the suggestion that he has overlooked anything about your situation is not credible.
Psalm 84:3 describes the sparrow finding a home near God’s altar. The smallest, most ordinary bird in the landscape found its place in the most sacred space.
The psalmist was not describing architecture. He was expressing the ache of wanting to be that close to God, close enough to build a life near his presence the way the sparrow nests near the altar without anyone questioning whether it belongs there.
The raven is ceremonially unclean in the Levitical system, and God chose ravens to feed Elijah. The dove is fragile and has no defense mechanism, and God chose the dove as the visible form of the Spirit descending on Jesus.
God uses the birds the world overlooks to do the work the world does not expect.

And where I have been anxious about provision, remind me of the ravens that fed Elijah and the God who noticed the sparrow the market gave away for free.
