Storms do not care about your plans.
They arrive on their own schedule, disrupt whatever was in progress, and leave behind damage that takes far longer to repair than the storm itself lasted.
Whether the storm is literal, the kind that floods a basement and takes down power lines, or the kind that arrives as a diagnosis or a sudden loss or a relationship ending without warning, the experience is similar: something was stable and now it is not, and you did not choose this.
The biblical relationship with storms is not one of pretended calm.
The psalmists describe raging waters, overwhelming floods, waves threatening to swallow everything.
The disciples on the Sea of Galilee were experienced fishermen, not easily frightened by water, and the text records that they were terrified.
They had reason to be. The storm was real. The boat was taking on water. The fear was proportional to the situation.
What Scripture offers is not the instruction to feel nothing about storms.
What it offers is a God who is present in them and who speaks into them with a different kind of authority than the wind has.
Psalm 107:29 says he calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Mark 4:39 records Jesus standing in the boat and saying Peace, be still to the wind and the waves, and there was a great calm.
What silenced the storm was not a technique or a prayer method. It was the presence and the word of the one who made the sea.
Job 38 is the passage where God speaks to Job from the whirlwind. He does not speak around the storm or after it. He speaks from inside it. The storm is where God chose to be heard.
That changes the question from why is this happening to whether the one who is speaking from inside this storm can be trusted.

The Storm Did Not Have the Final Word
Jonah’s storm ended when he went overboard, and a fish swallowed him.
That is not the rescue most people would choose, but it was the one that delivered him.
Paul’s storm ended with a shipwreck on Malta where the locals built a fire, treated the survivors with unusual kindness, and Paul proceeded to heal the sick on the island. The disciples’ storm ended with a great calm and a question they could not stop asking each other.
None of those storms had the final word.
John 16:33 is the verse that places the storm inside a larger context than the storm itself can provide.
In the world you will have tribulation. No qualifier, no exception clause. But the next sentence is what changes the weight of the first: take heart, I have overcome the world. The one speaking that sentence has authority the storm does not have, and the overcoming is already accomplished.
