The church in the New Testament bears very little resemblance to what most people picture when they hear the word.
No buildings. No designated clergy in the modern sense. No Sunday morning service with a program.
What the early church had was people who had encountered the risen Christ, who sold what they owned to meet each other’s needs, who gathered in homes and broke bread and prayed with the kind of urgency that comes from believing that something had genuinely changed in the world.
Acts 2:42 describes it simply: they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
That is the whole list. Four things. The simplicity is striking, and the results that followed include thousands coming to faith, the sick being healed, and the community being held in awe by everyone who observed it, suggesting that the four things were sufficient.
The Greek word for church is ekklesia, which means the called-out ones.
Not the gathered ones, not the religious ones, not the morally superior ones. The called-out ones. Called out of one kind of life into another, assembled not because of shared culture or similar background but because of a shared encounter with the same person.
Paul’s letters address thoroughly dysfunctional churches.
Corinth had division, sexual immorality, people getting drunk at the Lord’s Supper, and theological confusion about the resurrection. Galatia had reverted to legalism. Philippi had two women whose conflict was threatening the community’s coherence.
These were real groups of real people with real problems, and the letters were not written to ideal communities. They were written to actual ones.
The church is not the building where Christians meet. It is the people who have been called out, gathered together, and sent back into the world to make the gospel visible.

The Church Was Never Meant to Be Watched From a Distance
The early believers did not attend the church. They were the church, which is a different posture entirely.
Hebrews 10:25 warns against neglecting to meet together and frames it as something that becomes more urgent as the day approaches, not less.
The instinct to drift from community, to consume from a distance, to participate partially, is not a modern phenomenon. The writer of Hebrews was already addressing it in the first century.
