Adultery made the Ten Commandments.
That alone tells you how seriously God takes it.
Exodus 20:14 is five words in English: you shall not commit adultery. No qualifier, no context-dependent exception, no cultural adjustment clause.
The command stands in the same list as murder, theft, and idolatry. The positioning is deliberate.
Marital faithfulness occupies the same category of moral seriousness as the preservation of human life.
Jesus raised the bar in Matthew 5:28 by moving the definition from the physical act to the internal condition when he said anyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
The act was already prohibited. Jesus addressed the interior life that produces the act, which means the commandment cannot be satisfied by behavioral management alone. The heart is the jurisdiction.
Proverbs dedicates entire chapters to warning against adultery with a specificity that surprises first-time readers.
The descriptions are graphic, the consequences are named in detail, and the appeal is made directly to the reader’s capacity for reason: can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned?
The Bible also records what happens after. David committed adultery with Bathsheba, and the fallout consumed the rest of his reign.
But Psalm 51 exists because restoration was possible. The sin was catastrophic. The mercy was real.

Adultery Is the Sin That Burns Both Houses Down
Proverbs 6:27 asks whether someone can carry fire against their chest without being burned.
The question is rhetorical, and the answer is obvious, but the person entering the affair is somehow convinced they are the exception.
The fire will not burn them. The consequences will not apply to them. The fallout that happened to everyone else will somehow miss their situation.
It does not.
David was described as a man after God’s own heart, and the adultery with Bathsheba did not erase that description, but it consumed the peace of his household for the rest of his life.
The child died. His son Amnon repeated the pattern of sexual violence. Absalom rebelled. The consequences cascaded through the family in ways David could not have anticipated on the rooftop.
And yet Psalm 51 exists. David wrote it after Nathan confronted him. Create in me a clean heart, O God. The heart that produced the sin was the same heart that produced the repentance. The mercy was real. The consequences were also real. Both things were true at the same time.
John 8:11 records Jesus saying to the woman caught in adultery: neither do I condemn you. Then he added: go and sin no more. The mercy and the command arrived together.
