The most significant thing about God’s promises is not that they were spoken.
It is that he intends to keep them.
Jeremiah 1:12 records one of the most revealing exchanges in the entire Old Testament.
God shows Jeremiah a branch of an almond tree and asks him what he sees. Jeremiah identifies it.
God then says: you have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.
The almond tree in Hebrew is the shaqed, which means the watchful tree or the hastening tree, named because it blossoms before any other tree in Israel, at the first sign of spring.
God used the image of the hastening tree to make the point that his word does not sit passively waiting for something to happen to it.
He is actively watching over it, hastening it to its fulfillment.
This is a theological statement with enormous practical implications.
When God speaks a promise, he does not make it and then move on to other matters while the promise drifts toward fulfillment on its own momentum.
He watches over it. He oversees its trajectory. He ensures that the obstacles it encounters do not become permanent barriers. He guards it against the opposition that would interrupt it and the delay that would discourage the one waiting for it.
The word he watches over is the word he sent out.
Isaiah 55:11 says his word will not return to him empty, but will accomplish what he desires and achieve the purpose for which he sent it.
The purpose was set before the word was spoken. The watching is the ongoing work between the speaking and the fulfilling.
What he said, he will do. He is watching to make sure of it.
He Said It, and He Will Do It
1. I Am Watching Over My Word to Perform It
“Then the LORD said to me, ‘You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.'” ESV | Jeremiah 1:12
Watching over is the active, present-tense posture of God toward what he has spoken.
The promise is not abandoned between the speaking and the fulfilling.

Will fulfill is the confident declaration.
The purpose he assigned does not expire before it is completed.
His Word Has a Completion Rate of One Hundred Percent
5. So Shall My Word Be That Goes Out From My Mouth, It Shall Accomplish What I Purpose
“So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” ESV | Isaiah 55:11
Not returning empty is the guarantee.
Every word sent has a purpose it will succeed in.

The most permanent things in the created order are less permanent than what God has said.

Never lies is the characterization.
The promise was made by someone constitutionally incapable of not keeping it.

As he had said and as he had promised are the operative phrases.
Twenty-five years after the promise, the performance arrived.

“He remembered his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations, the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac.” ESV | Psalm 105:8–9
A thousand generations is the scope of the remembering.
The covenant he made is the covenant he keeps.

It hastens to the end is the active movement of the promise.
The slowness is apparent, not actual.

He who promised is faithful is the reason holding fast is possible.

He swore by himself because there is no higher guarantee.

The almond tree image in Jeremiah 1:12 is not incidental.
God chose the hastening tree, the tree that springs into blossom while every other tree is still bare, to describe his posture toward his own word. He is not passively waiting for the word to reach its destination on its own. He is active, attentive, and committed to its fulfillment.
The person whose faith is built on his promises does not have to ensure the promises arrive. They have to remain in the position of the one who is waiting for what the watchful God is bringing. The watching is his job. The trusting is yours.
What he said will be done. He is watching over it right now.
