Every significant relationship in human experience is built on time.
Not intention. Not affection in theory. Actual, allocated, consistent time.
You cannot know someone you never spend time with.
You can know about them, maintain a general goodwill toward them, reference the relationship when it is convenient, and still be fundamentally a stranger to them because the time that builds genuine knowing was never given.
The relationship exists as a category without functioning as a reality.
The relationship with God is no different in this respect.
The people in Scripture whose relationship with God was most vivid and most productive were the people who made time for it most deliberately.
Moses went up the mountain.
David was a man of the psalms, which means he was a man of constant interior conversation with God, through praise, through lament, through confusion, through gratitude.
Daniel prayed three times a day without negotiation, even when a law was passed making it a capital offense.
Jesus, who was the Son of God, rose early to pray in solitary places.
If the Son of God structured his life around time alone with the Father, the question for everyone else answers itself.
The most common reason people give for not spending time with God is that they do not have time.
This is not usually a time problem. It is a priority problem. Everyone has time for what they have decided matters.
The question is, has the daily time with God cleared the threshold of what matters enough to actually show up on the schedule?

Daniel’s prayer practice was not a spiritual luxury.
